Honorable Mention

Eyes of the Beholder received honorable mention for people's choice award a little while ago in a group show. I found out by accident when I saw my name published in the newsletter of an art group that I belong to. (oops- a happy surprise on my part)   I am grateful that I had several votes and thank you all who voted for my work.  I look forward to the challenge in October for the next group show.

Although this drawing is sold,  Eyes of the Beholder in Oil is available for purchase.

Two Eggs and a Bowl

Of course I had to do a second variation with this bowl.

After I finish my four week teaching stretch.  I will be getting ready for our local art walk and will be taking July off from teaching to focus on art production.

Bowl With Eggs

I had this bowl for years and really liked the different colours on this object.  Depending upon the position the viewer was, it had cool tones such as blues and greens and many warm tones such as oranges, reds, and pinks.

Amber Anne In Progress

A sixteen by twenty pastel drawing that I have just completed.  The picture above shows my progress last month.  I will not be posting the completed drawing of Amber Anne for a little while as I give my eyes a break and with time, look at my drawing with  fresh eyes. The drawing of Amber Anne will not be available to purchase as I am currently having a solo show next March (2013)  and need to get inventory. Today I have made a decision on my next drawing which will be a person and yet need to determine the size.  Moreover, I have started doing some studies of a new medium I am exploring and will be doing a small 5x7" picture.  I hope to have that one posted towards the end of June if all goes well.

Eyes Of The Beholder

What really grabbed my attention with this one was the eyes.  I absolutely loved the intense stare of this cat and the amazing colours in her eyes.  I get lost drawing and painting eyes.  I practiced painting these ones several times before I did the real thing.  I wanted to may sure I had the colours correct, the highlights and reflected lights in the right place.  I also did a charcoal drawing of this cat previously. Currently my cat paintings will be on linen canvas which will be slightly more expensive than the panels. I have "Pixie" all drawn (see the pastel drawing in previous entry) and will be exploring painting cats on linen more in the future.  Currently I have just finished a 16x20 pastel drawing of a cat named Amber and will be posting her soon.  I just need to take a break from this drawing and look at it in a few days with fresh eyes to do some final touch ups.

I also want to share great news too.  Eyes of the Beholder, the charcoal drawing, won Honorable Mention at a recent show I participated in.

Brass and Still Life II

Like the previous Brass and Still Life painting, I wanted to paint a brass subject. Using a slightly different set up, I tried out  a different composition.  Not sure which one I like better, but I would love to hear your thoughts on which Brass Still Life appeals to you.  Traditionally,  I have always loved oil paintings that depicted onions and eggs and since they share similar colours I wanted to integrate these items to off set the cool brassy notes.  Currently I have not been painting as I was preparing for a three week sketching course that I recently taught at the university.  Sketching is one of my favourite things to do because I draw from life.  With both sketching and painting from life, I enjoy the valuable experience of connecting to my subjects and the challenge of seeing rich tones of colours from my subjects.  I am looking forward to getting back to painting in oils as my class at the university is finished.

Calico Cat

I had this photo for many years before painting her.  Calico cats are very precious to me as I had one shy of 18 years.  I love their colours.  I have started to paint on a new surface, linen,  which I will do for the animals and slightly larger pieces.  I do like painting on linen as it blends the oils much better.  Unfortunately linen is more expensive than cotton or the panels, therefore the cost of linen pieces will be slightly higher.

Hidden Dreams

This is a small ten acre piece of land tucked behind my father's land.  At the time my father purchased this land, he did not know about the hidden treasure or perhaps the added bonus and was pleasantly surprised.  Growing up, I frequently walked  this area, cross country skied and often drove the ski-doo with a toboggan.  Many mammals and birds live in this area and  has been a dream of mine to one day build a house here. This past winter, before the sun was going down, I walked this area and the colours of the clouds and the crisp air was too perfect.  I loved the combination of the warm hues from the land and trees with the cool brilliant blue sky.  Hidden Dreams shows the beauty of life that at that particular moment witnessed and loved.
