A Luminous Persimmon

It has been a slight while since my last posting.  To keep you all updated on what's going on in my art world is that I have been busy drawing.  My drawing of Amber is finished (and has been for quite some time) and will be posting that very shortly.  I am almost finished another drawing of a cat and hope to have that posted in the next week or so and am currently working on a portrait of Ama (which her portrait is about half done).  Intermittently, daily painting has been interjected into my life. I do this to keep up my skills with a brush and enhance my observational skills in interpreting colours.

Eyes Of The Beholder

What really grabbed my attention with this one was the eyes.  I absolutely loved the intense stare of this cat and the amazing colours in her eyes.  I get lost drawing and painting eyes.  I practiced painting these ones several times before I did the real thing.  I wanted to may sure I had the colours correct, the highlights and reflected lights in the right place.  I also did a charcoal drawing of this cat previously. Currently my cat paintings will be on linen canvas which will be slightly more expensive than the panels. I have "Pixie" all drawn (see the pastel drawing in previous entry) and will be exploring painting cats on linen more in the future.  Currently I have just finished a 16x20 pastel drawing of a cat named Amber and will be posting her soon.  I just need to take a break from this drawing and look at it in a few days with fresh eyes to do some final touch ups.

I also want to share great news too.  Eyes of the Beholder, the charcoal drawing, won Honorable Mention at a recent show I participated in.

Brass and Still Life II

Like the previous Brass and Still Life painting, I wanted to paint a brass subject. Using a slightly different set up, I tried out  a different composition.  Not sure which one I like better, but I would love to hear your thoughts on which Brass Still Life appeals to you.  Traditionally,  I have always loved oil paintings that depicted onions and eggs and since they share similar colours I wanted to integrate these items to off set the cool brassy notes.  Currently I have not been painting as I was preparing for a three week sketching course that I recently taught at the university.  Sketching is one of my favourite things to do because I draw from life.  With both sketching and painting from life, I enjoy the valuable experience of connecting to my subjects and the challenge of seeing rich tones of colours from my subjects.  I am looking forward to getting back to painting in oils as my class at the university is finished.

Abandoned Lifestyle

This old farmstead is a couple miles from where I grew up.  I use to bike here on Sunday mornings and walk around this grassy landscape and imagine what life would have been like when this farm was functioning.  Imagining the people, kids, animals that kept this area busy and full of life.  Now shrouded by trees and grass, one driving along the road would miss it.  The old barn which is in front of these buildings is now collapsed and gave up its structure a while ago.  With old photos of it, I will at some point create a painting of it.

Orchids

These I have completed over the last week.  Last year one of my students gave me these beautiful orchids for my birthday and took pictures of them.  I recently came across the photos and thought why not-it would be fun and challenging at the same time.  The last one was done on a linen panel from the states and I really like how the oil goes on it.  Unfortunately I just ordered more and will have to paint up a storm before I can try it again.  They are more expensive but why not.

Currently I now have my ten paintings to be shown at the Second Cup and the whole process starts all over.  In between, I will be squeezing in some larger ones for an upcoming show in May.  I currently have two 12 x12s on the go and hope to have them finished soon.

I will be resigning as of tomorrow-(just making an official public notice before my other place knows :)) teaching at a certain location-it was only once a week.  It was a good experience but now it is time for something different and new.  I am looking forward and welcoming a new change.

Hidden Treasure

Another summer's eve where Mary a volunteer where I work and myself went driving around to take photos of landscapes.  As we were driving along a secluded road that had rows and rows of trees, a brief break appeared as I looked to my left and I saw a glimpse of this landscape.  As Mary stopped the car, I fought my way through the thick branches to take this picture of a farmer's field.  I tried something different with this panel.  Being a previous painting that I did not like, I painted a warm tone over it and forgot all about it.  Having a spontaneous moment, I decided to give it a try with this landscape and loved the effect it gave.  I will do more of this in the near future.

Summer's Haze

Another one of the photos that I took this summer with my dad and it is about two miles west from where my parents live.  It is actually an old abandoned place with some red buildings still erect.  I loved how the crocked tree leaned confidently to the right in this field. Attempting to stand apart from the rest of the trees.   A pinkish haze enveloped the horizon that summer's eve and the grass in the foreground swayed gently in the evening breeze.  It was beautiful and perfect.

A Prairie Dream

With this one, I combined two photos.  The original had a clear blue sky and I wanted to create something with a slight variation. I loved how one of my photos captured pinks and oranges in the sky.  In addition, the buildings were originally green and were lost in the landscape.  With other photo references that I had of different buildings, I decided to change these buildings to red to create more contrast.  Trying out new colour schemes and had fun experimenting on this scene.

Apres Le Bain (after the bath)

I took this picture of my cat Minou after I gave her a bath.  The sun was setting and I really liked the abstract shapes of the shadows.  It is not entirely finished as I have some minor touch ups to do.  It will be appearing in a local magazine for animals lovers called"Creature's All"  For more information on this online magazine please visit: www.creaturesall.com

With my paints, I use a limited palette and from time to time, will interject a new colour into the mixture as an accent.  I had fun using a new blue called maganese blue.  It really adds a  nice brightness to colours.  In addition, I was playing with a palette knife to create the white borders.

Pretty In Pink

I have been sitting on this photo for awhile and decided over the holiday season to paint it.  I choose to use a linen panel to capture the delicate shapes in the petals. What inspired me to paint this one was the contrast between the sunlight flower in relation to the dark background.
